Vancouver Fire Department Urban Search and Rescue Unit waiting for call to help in Haiti

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Fire Department’s Urban Search and Rescue team is ready to go to Haiti, if they get the call from the federal government.  Vancouver’s fire chief says about half of the high-tech heavy lift search and rescue squad (about 30 people) could be sent to Haiti.

The unit has only been deployed once–to New Orleans for Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  Who would go, and what kind of equipment they would take depends on what kind of role they are asked to take.  The federal government’s disaster assistance team is assessing what’s needed in Haiti, and what Canada can do to help.
