VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Promoting world peace, and helping earthquake victims in Haiti at the same time. Governor General Michaelle Jean unveiled the Olympic ‘Truce Wall’ today at Vancouver’s Olympic Village. And eventually, you might be able to buy a piece of the wall.
The Governor General was the first to sign the Truce Wall panels. Athletes from around the world will also be signing the wall, and after the Games are over, pieces of the walls in both Vancouver and Whistler will be auctioned off–with proceeds going to Haiti earthquake relief.
Jean says it’s a worthwhile effort to involve the Olympic movement to help people in time of need. “It’s an investment for peace, but also for solidarity with the most disadvantaged people on this continent we share.”
VANOC CEO John Furlong says the Truce Wall represents the spirit of the ancient Olympics, when wars would be put on hold for the duration of the Games.
