Throne speech offers property tax breaks to families with children

By

VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – The B.C Liberals have outlined some property tax breaks for families with children in this afternoon’s throne speech.  The plan will allow families with children under 18 years to defer their property taxes.

The new program will be similar to property-tax deferral options already available to seniors and those facing financial hardship.  Lt.-Gov. Steven Point read the throne speech, in which the B.C. government says Olympic Games momentum will drive its push to reform education.  The government is also promising new and smarter forms of schooling, including neighbourhood learning centres that will be open seven days a week.

Today’s throne speech marks a three-day opening of the legislature, which then takes a three-week Olympic break starting Thursday.  MLAs return with the tabling of the budget on March 2nd.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper is scheduled to deliver a speech inside the legislature on Thursday.

The complete text of the throne speech is available through the B.C. Government website
