Patriotism seems to be on the rise

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – You can’t go very far in this city these days without seeing a maple leaf or a friendly face. We’re finding out what’s behind this sudden jump in Canadian patriotism.

It may be just our experience covering the torch run, but it seems plenty of people are swelling with pride for the true north strong and free.  Psychologist Dr. Derek Swain says usually Canadians are strong silent types when it comes to their national pride, but with the Olympics just days away, we’re becoming more open about our love of country.  “The Olympics are our very special event.  It’s quite an honour for us to be hosting it in this country and so I think naturally there’s a lot of enthusiasm that builds around that.”

Swain says it’s remarkable to see just how friendly the city has become, especially since we do have a reputation for being cold and distant.
