Torch relay: West Vancouver welcomes the Olympic Flame

By

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s been through North Vancouver, even up Grouse Mountain and back.  The rain came and went but did nothing to curb the enthusiasm of the thousands of people gathered in West Vancouver to see the Olympic Torch.  The torch took a canoe from Squamish Nation to the shore of North Vancouver, made its way through Lonsdale, and headed east as far as Deep Cove, before turning back along Mt. Seymour Parkway.

Canadian Snowboard Team member Justin Lamoureux  “surfed” on top of a Grouse Mountain gondola with the flame.  Lamoureux’s roommate John Rees, who works with our sister station, Mountain FM, carried the Olympic Torch early this evening along the base of Grouse Mountain.

The Torch finally arrived in West Vancouver, and Spirit Square was packed, as everyone came to see the lighting of the Community Cauldron.  One of this leg’s torch bearers was Kathy Butler. “I have been an Olympic freak since 1976.  I have been to three Olympic Games, this will be my fourth. I’ve also been a volunteer for three years.  It’s just something I can do because I will never be an athlete.”  Her 16 year old daughter ran in West Vancouver as well.

The crowd was enthusiastic and full of Olympic spirit.  “I love it I have been up since 6 a.m. to see it at Lonsdale Quay, and then I went to work to come back and see this.”

This leg of the relay brings to an end day 104 of the torch’s journey. On Friday the torch will be carried to B.C. Place for the Opening Ceremonies
