VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here and with the final cauldron being lit Friday athletes, officials and Olympic fans are ready. Team Canada women’s hockey captain Hayley Wickenheiser says walking into B.C. Place will be an amazing experience. “That’s going to be something special, walking into 60,000 people most of whom will be Canadians who are happy to see us and I just think it’s a lot of emotions to go through and just take it all in and enjoy the moment.”
Even though her first priority is hockey, Wickenheiser hopes to catch some of the other Olympic events. “I’m going to go see speed skating; some of my friends are competing there. Probably men’s hockey and I wouldn’t mind getting up to Whistler when all of our events are over to see some of the skiing events.”
If Canada were to win, it would be a third straight medal for the women’s hockey, a feat that has yet to be accomplished. The women’s hockey team gets started right away as they play Slovakia on Saturday afternoon.
