CALGARY (NEWS1130) – The president and CEO of WestJet Airlines has unexpectedly announced his resignation. Sean Durfy is leaving effective April 1st and will also quit the board of directors at that time, according to a late-afternoon news release.

The announcement cites personal reasons but isn’t more specific.  Durfy says “This was a very difficult decision for me; however, after careful consideration, I have decided that this is best for me and my family.” He adds “Those things I set out to accomplish at WestJet have now been achieved and I believe this is an appropriate time to allow others to carry the torch while I spend more time with my young family.”

Durfy has been with WestJet since 2004 and has led the company since September 2007.  Taking over as CEO will be Gregg Saretsky, a former Canadian Airlines executive.
