Pemberton deals with tragedy on the slopes

PEMBERTON (NEWS1130) – Six deaths by avalanche in B.C.’s backcountry last month and 10 this season. We’re up in Pemberton this morning, the site of the latest tragedy.

A heli-ski trip down Mt. Currie summit yesterday afternoon should have been the next great adventure.  Instead, three companions brought a body home.

As word in Pemberton spreads that the victim is a local man in his 30s, people balance preparing for a loss with the rush of extreme sport. “Why do they do it? Well, you ski down one mountain and it is only so high, it’s 5000 feet. The next guy goes ‘well i did 6000 feet.’ It’s bragging rights also on top of it.”

According to police the man was swept away over several cliffs and then buried by snow. The group dug him out but he died on the mountain.
