Woman cycling around North America victim of Vancouver bike thief

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A Swedish woman’s dream to cycle around North America has been abruptly halted, thanks to the theft of her bike in Vancouver.

Linda Hokka’s bike, and that of her boyfriend, were locked to a pole in a carport, at a home in the Fraser and 13th area on Saturday, when the thief struck.

The two had started off on their cycle tour from New York last September, and arrived in Vancouver in January, for a winter hiatus before hoping to hit the road again in June.

“I know it’s only material, it’s only a bike. But for me it’s more than a bike because I’ve been cycling on it for 8,000 kilometres, and I have so many memories with this bike,” she says.

Jana McGuinness with the Vancouver Police says unfortunately Hokka has become statistic.

“It’s in the neighbourhood of 2,000 bikes a year that are stolen in Vancouver. It’s not really from any particular area. We see bike thefts across the city,” she points out.

She says the odds are Hokka’s expensive bike will be sold for only a few dollars on the street.
