ST. JOHN’S, Nfld. – Family and friends of Terry Fox have gathered at the Mile Zero memorial in St. John’s today where the Canadian icon began his Marathon of Hope 30 years ago to the day.

Those who gathered on the waterfront, including his parents Rolly and Betty, said Terry would be floored by his own legacy.

His attempt to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research has so far raised $500-million and the Terry Fox Foundation continues to provide funding to help find cures for cancer.

Fox dipped his artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean on April 12, 1980, with the intention of running a marathon a day until he made it to the West Coast.

He got as far as Thunder Bay, Ont., where the spread of the cancer that had claimed one of his legs, returned.

An announcement on cancer research is expected later, Monday.
