SURREY (NEWS1130) – Tens of thousands have gathered in Surrey for the annual Vaisakhi parade, the harvest festival and luckily the rain didn’t dampen any party spirits.

Sonia is there helping serve up free food to the crowds.  She says they have a wide variety of East Indian delights being dished up.  “Chai tea for one, with some sweets.  Rice with curry, samosas, pakora’s which are also deep fried.  I would like to say ‘Happy Vaisakhi’ to everyone, which is the birth of Khalsa.”

Most people are not talking about the controversy surrounding comments made by organizers on a Punjabi radio station earlier this week.  Those comments surrounded the safety of MP Ujjal Dosanjh and MLA Dave Hayer.

However, there is a float with images of Sikh figures, that some call ‘martyrs,’ and the flag of Khalistan is also present.

The parade route has caused a few road closures.  The key one is along 85th Avenue and 128th Street to Newton Athletic Park.  The #323, 324 and 329 buses will all be re-routed.  Keep it on News1130 for traffic every 10 minutes on the ones and for traffic alerts as they happen.
