Vancouver school board hopes for last minute meeting with education minister

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – With a Thursday deadline looming, the Vancouver School Board is firing off a letter to the education minister, hoping for a meeting before the board decides on major job and program cuts.

Trustee Jane Bouey says the letter simply reflects the over all sentiment being voiced by hundreds of people in the community.

“The parents, teachers, students and administrators were all unanimous that it was important that the minister hear first hand from us about the situation we face here in Vancouver,” says Bouey.

She says trustees are feeling frustrated that they may have to cut 200 jobs and various music and arts programs in an effort to address an $18-million budget shortfall.

On Monday, the board voted to slash ten days from the school year.
