Safer nightlife thanks to Barwatch program

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Bar owners and Vancouver Police have been working together under the Barwatch umbrella for over a dozen years now.  The group believes their hard work has created a safer local nightlife.

Barwatch President John Teti says bar owners and Vancouver Police can take credit for less crime and violence in downtown bars.

He adds partiers should feel confident about their clubbing experience, especially where there’s a Barwatch sticker.  “You’re going to be in an environment that has video surveillance, that you had to scan your ID to get into, more than likely you’ve had to go through a metal detector.  You also have the assurance that if there are any gangsters or criminal people that the VPD will remove them.”

The way Teti sees it, the Olympics were the ultimate test case — he says they experienced weeks with no problems in bars across the downtown core.
