Controversial plan to install ‘smart meters’ across B.C.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – BC Hydro calls its ‘smart-meters’ cutting-edge technology that will save you money, but critics still wonder who else will have access to the information the devices collect.

The controversial $1 billion plan calls for the meters to be installed in 1.8 million homes and businesses across the province.  However, privacy advocates still want to know who will hold and protect the information the meters collect.

Ontario’s privacy commissioner tells the Province newspaper they will allow third parties to peer into your home — adding you can imagine how tempting the marketing opportunities will be.

The meters can track energy use on a minute-by-minute basis — providing information instantaneously to the consumer, the electricity provider and potentially others.
