Police kick off intersection safety awareness campaign

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver Police, ICBC and RCMP say slowing down and observing basic rules of the road would save countless lives.  They’re stepping up enforcement at intersections to try and teach bad drivers a very important lesson.

We’re all busy and have places to go, but police say driving dangerously through intersections to save a few moments is not worth it.  Whether it’s running red lights, using turn lanes to bypass traffic or just driving to fast.

RCMP Superintendent Norm Gaumont says running red and yellow lights, in particular can cause T-bone accidents.  “Vehicles are hit right in the door and there’s absolutely no protection. When a car is going at those speeds, and it hits a vehicle right in the door on either side… the driver or passenger’s seriously hurt or killed.”

Over the last two years in Vancouver alone, 35 people have died in car crashes, 75 per cent of those fatal accidents happened in intersections.  Mounties say officers have been told there will be no warnings, only tickets.
