B.C. onboard for national security regulator

By

VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – Finance Minister Colin Hansen says B.C. supports the idea of a national securities regulator to police stock exchanges across Canada, but the province isn’t ready to join Ottawa just yet.

Alberta and Quebec are firmly opposed and are threatening to go to court to prevent the federal government from overstepping what they consider provincial jurisdiction. Hanson says B.C. is just waiting to see the details of the federal plan before joining in. “Well I’m encouraged it is good to see some progress is being made. As you know we support the concept of a national security regulator sin principle, we’re anxious to see the details of the legislation. Generally speaking, what we see so far we like.”

The federal government says it will take its draft legislation on a national securities regulator to the Supreme Court of Canada for a ruling on whether it has the authority to create the agency.
