DTES tenants beat Sahota family in court

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Chalk up a win for the little guy, a judge has ruled in favour of the tenants of a run-down building on the east side.

More than run-down in fact; in 2007 36 renters were ordered out of the building on Pandora Street when it was deemed unsafe after the roof caved in.  The building is owned operated by the Sahota family who are well-known by building inspectors. The family owns three other rooming houses in the downtown core.  In her decision, the judge awarded the tenants $170,000 in total.

Lawyer for the tenants, Sarah Khan says it’s a great day. “The court has rejected all of the landlord’s arguments that they raised to try to have the residential tenancy branch decision set aside, and we think the judge did a fantastic job and a meticulous job.”

Khan says in her view there are no grounds for appeal in the case, she just hopes the Sahotas pay up.  She adds as far as she’s aware it’s the first time the Sahotas have been defeated in court.
