Fix for ticks nixed; father bothered

A Bedford father wants to see action from the province to get rid of ticks that carry Lyme disease.

Andrew Payzant has a 13-year old son who was diagnosed with the disease two years ago.

Payzant lives near Admiral’s Cove Park, where the city had approved the spraying of pesticides to get rid of the Lyme-infested ticks, but the province’s health minister shot-down the idea saying science doesn’t support the spray proposal.

Speaking on Maritime Morning, Payzant says he doesn’t get it.

“Most research will show that it is very effective,” he said. “So I don’t understand which science she’s referring to.”

He says the spraying would be part of a long-term plan.

Payzant wants the province to propose a solution, because the disease has had a serious affect on his son’s life.

“It manifested primarily as arthritis in his knee,” said Payzant.

Richard MacLellan heads the city’s sustainability office, and says he too is looking for direction from the province.

“I’ve exhausted what I can see out there as solutions,” he said. “I’m really looking to them for some guidance at this point.”

He says he thought the low toxic spray would have brought some results for people living in the area.
