Two RCMP officers working on Surrey Six murder case have been suspended

SURREY (NEWS1130) – The mother of one of the two innocent victims in the Surrey Six massacre says she is surprised two officers on the case have been suspended.  But Eileen Mohan, whose son Chris was one of two innocent victims, says police want to iron out any other problems ahead of a court case.

In December, a sergeant was put on desk duty for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a witness.  RCMP say an Ontario Police investigation into the sergeant now includes a supervisor and a co-worker.  Both the sergeant and the supervisor have now been suspended.

RCMP Chief Superintendent Janice Armstrong says the co-worker of the supervisor is also being sent to another unit.  She says the RCMP doesn’t want anything muddying the waters when it comes to court time.  “We want to make sure, in this particular case, that if there is any information about inappropriate behaviour on behalf of our officers, that it comes out beforehand.  Because ultimately, if it is true, it would come out at the trial.  So we want to make sure that we are dealing with it as rapidly as possible.”

Armstrong says all three men could be described as seasoned investigators and Ontario Provincial Police were brought in to provide a layer of impartiality.

RCMP say no other employees have been implicated, and the new allegations concerning the supervisor and the co-worker do not include having an inappropriate relationship with the witness.

Eileen Mohan says the police have been very transparent with her.  “Trying to, kind of, vet everything away so when the official case goes, it goes as smoothly as possible, because the official case is going to be very traumatic.  Because then we get to know what actually happened that day and how my son actually died.”

Four young men believed to be linked to the drug trade–along with two innocent men–were murdered in a Surrey high-rise in October 2007, B.C.’s worst gangland slaying.
