Water safety concerns for Canadian newcomers

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – People who have lived in Canada for fewer than five years are at higher risk for drowning when boating or swimming. A new study commissioned by the Lifesaving Society suggests they are four times more likely to be unable to swim than those born here.

Dale Miller with the society explains Canadian newcomers often have different knowledge or experiences around issues involving water safety. “New Canadians are often coming from a country where learning to swim and water safety are not near the high priority that they are here in Canada.”

He says some may not be familiar with their surroundings and may not be able to read signs like, for example, ones that warn of a ‘steep drop off ahead!’

Ninety-two per cent of new Canadians feel learning to swim is an important life skill; even more say all children should receive swimming lessons.
