Expert: Boat of asylum seekers headed to B.C. may be one of many

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A ship reportedly full of Sri Lankans looking for asylum is headed toward B.C. There may be more ready to follow and a terrorism expert is warning Canada the Tamil Tigers are watching closely.

The MV Sun Sea could hit our shores as early as next week, reportedly filled with 200 Tamils. Dr. Rohan Gunaratna heads a research centre in Singapore. He specializes in the Tamil Tigers and he tells the Globe and Mail two more ships are plying the waters of South Asia right now, watching how Ottawa reacts to the Sun Sea.

Gunaratna was one of the first to warn Ottawa about the Sun Sea. He tells the Globe his sources indicate the other ships are in the process of finding passengers and collecting their cash.

It was less than a year ago the Ocean Lady arrived off the West Coast with 76 Tamil’s on board looking for asylum. Ottawa has been tracking the MV Sun Sea. It is reportedly carrying high-ranking members of the Tigers, banned as a terrorist organization in Canada.

The Department of Foreign Affairs isn’t commenting because of what it calls ‘operational security issues.’
