More details on early liquor store closures during the Olympics

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – We’re learning more about why downtown Vancouver liquor stores were closed early during the 2010 Games – and who ordered the closures.

During the Olympics, people were seen walking into liquor stores and guzzling their booze as soon as they walked out of the store. A letter from the General Manager of the Liquor Control Board and Licensing Branch sent to retailers in the downtown core, said that while they realised the impacts of early closures on sales, they needed to balance that with the need to protect public safety.

24 Hours reports the G.M. sent letters requesting the stores be closed at 7 p.m. – about four hours early on February 20th. Closure requests were also sent out on a few other days during the Games.

On just one day during the Olympics – there were more than 2,500 liquor pour-outs, 30 ‘drunk in public’ arrests and 10 fights.
