Hot weather has B.C. SPCA concerned about pet safety

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s a message pet owners just don’t seem to get – when the temperature goes up, dogs just don’t belong in the car.

Lorie Chortyk with the B.C. SPCA says it’s the same old story every summer. Hundreds of dogs are trapped in hot cars, left without water or put out in the yard in the extreme heat.

She says every couple of years, there’s a death, and the animal’s owner is left devastated. “A gentleman had taken his dog with him. He was picking somebody up at the airport.  He thought he was just going to be running in and out to pick up his friend.  The plane was delayed, the man just didn’t realize how much time had passed, and by the time he got back to his car, his dog had died.”

Chortyk says when in doubt, leave the dog at home with lots of water. And put off walking the dog until the temperature cools down in the evening.
