VANCOUVER(NEWS1130) – Today a B.C Supreme Court judge is expected to decide on a court battle over the HST.
A coalition of B.C. businesses claim the HST is a federal tax, so the provincial government’s consent isn’t constitutionally required.
Last week, Elections B.C. verified the Fight HST petition but refused to forward it to the B.C. Legislature until the court case was settled. The anti-HST campaign is pretty confident the judge will take its side.
Former premier Bill Vander Zalm has been spear heading the anti-HST movement. “If he decides for the unlikely event it goes in favour of the business group, then we simply prepare and proceed as we had planned in the first place with the recall.”
He says if the judge sides with the business group it means taxation decisions in B.C. are being made by politicians in other provinces. Vander Zalm believes if that’s the case, we’re in deeper trouble than he thought.
