Habs name new captain

MONTREAL (NEWS1130) – It’s not a very well kept secret, but the Montreal Canadiens officially named Brian Gionta their new captain, Wednesday morning.

Gionta becomes the 28th captain in the team’s 101-year history, and only the second American-born player to be given the ‘C.’ The 31-year-old is going into his ninth NHL season and his second with the Habs, after spending the beginning of his career with the New Jersey Devils.

Andrei Markov and Hal Gill will wear the ‘A.’ Montreal has not had a captain since the team parted ways with Saku Koivu in 2009.
