Canucks captain remains a mystery

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Canucks are gearing up for game day tomorrow, but there’s still no word on who will be the new captain.

All the candidates are there: Both Sedins, Ryan Kesler, Dan Hamhuis. But when they stepped out on the ice for a photo-op, no one had a “C” on their jersey.

News1130 Sports Director Ann Schmaltz says Ryan Kesler and Henrik Sedin are the two front runners, and Sedin probably has a slight edge. “Henrik is the reigning Art Ross Trophy winner, the Hart Trophy winner, Mr. MVP of the League. He’s got to be the strongest candidate.”

Schmaltz says the new captain will probably be unveiled as part of the pre-game ceremonies at Saturday night’s home opener.

She adds this season could be a crucial one for Coach V. “The fact that this is the fifth season that head coach Alain Vigneault has been the top bench boss along with his associate Rick Bowness, I would think that, given the players that Mike Gillis has provided them with, if they don’t get it done this season, maybe the coaching staff is on the hot seat.”

Meanwhile, the team rolled out new technology to keep the fans happy — a new app that will stream live games on smartphones. Canucks COO Victor de Bonis says it’s not quite ready yet. “The timing for that is hopefully within the next four to six weeks.” No word on how much that app will cost.
