Caribbean rains force change for Whitecaps playoff game

BAYAMON, PUERTO RICO (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Whitecaps face a change of venue a day before facing the Puerto Rico Islanders in the first leg of their 2010 USSF D-2 Pro League playoff in Bayamon, Puerto Rico Thursday.

Heavy rains have forced league officials to move the opening game to a turf field complex with the weather creating unplayable conditions at the Islander’s home field.  A turf surface can create strange bounces but Whitecaps’ Captain Martin Nash tells News 1130 Sports that it beats playing on a waterlogged field, and that it is the same for both teams.

The Whitecaps and Islanders have a rich playoff history. Vancouver beat Puerto Rico 2-1 in 2008 to win the first USL-1 Championship Final to be contested between two clubs outside the United States. They played to a pair of ties in regular season action this year. Gametime Thursday is 5 p.m. The second leg of the series is Sunday at 4 p.m. at Swangard Stadium.
