October is breast cancer awareness month

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The entire month of October has been dedicated to breast cancer awareness.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation says 2,800 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and 640 women will die from it.

But despite these numbers, Linda Morris, CEO of the BC / Yukon Chapter, says they’ve come a long way in terms of raising money and awareness for breast cancer. “The numbers have changed dramatically from even 20 years ago, when 75 per cent of women who came down with breast cancer would die. Now, we’re seeing quite the reverse in that 85 per cent and higher are surviving.”

She says early detection has played a big role in reducing the number of breast cancer deaths. “There has been a big push to educate women in the last twenty-five years and to really increase their awareness of the value of a mammogram. Early detection is a key to surviving.”
