Plastic bags could be on their way out

By

OTTAWA, ON. (NEWS1130) – Get ready to say goodbye to the plastic shopping bag if one federal politician gets her way.  Ontario New Democrat Irene Mathyssen feels plastic bags should be banned nationwide.  And as a result a private member’s bill is being introduced in the House of Commons today.

She’s basing her bill on what she has seen in Europe.  “They didn’t have plastic bags, they had shopping carts….little portable carts that they use to take their groceries home and it works for them and I think it can work for us, too.”

Mathyssen got the idea from two students entering a contest called “Create Your Canada” and was impressed by the amount of research they put into the issue.

Plastic bags are already banned in communities like Fort McMurray, Alberta and Leaf Rapids, Manitoba.  Shoppers in Toronto are charged a five cent fee for each one.
