Flaggers: Not all drivers slow down in construction zones

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s been almost two months since construction zone flaggers asked police for more help to keep their workplace safe and drivers responsible. Last year alone, 17 flaggers were hurt while they were on the job; two of them died.

Diane Herback says she’s grateful for stricter enforcement in construction zones. But despite the stats, penalties, and the publicity, not all drivers are stepping up. “They make me feel like I’m not so alone out there. But in general, I just don’t think that there’s a change in society as a whole, [and in] drivers through construction zones.”

Herback feels flaggers have done their part by working hard to be more visible. Now with early darkness and the rainy season, she says speeding through construction zones could have greater consequences.
