Report: province has unclear standards to protect children

By

VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – The representative for children and youth says the provincial government has implemented fewer than half the recommendations made in a 2006 report, following the high-profile deaths of children under government supervision.

Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond says the system is in a state of confusion because of unclear standards. “The performance of the system is not what it should be and as a result services are not consistently there.”

But the Minister of Children and Family Development Mary Polak says the representative’s report shows the government has actually taken action on 80 per cent of the recommendations “with the exception of those that would reasonably be expected to be of an on-going nature, or those that are no longer applicable,” she explains.

She says her ministry disagrees with Turpel-Lafond on several points but looks forward to sitting down with her and talking about this report.
