Public hearing ordered into the police beating of Yao Wei Wu

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – We all remember the photos of his injured face – the blood, bruises and swollen eye.  The BC Police Complaint Commission has called for a public hearing into the police beating of Yao Wei Wu in Vancouver.

It happened on January 21st,  while police were responding to a domestic violence call.  They went to the right house but the wrong suite.  Afterward, VPD Police Chief Jim Chu visited Wu’s home, and apologized in person.

Delta police were asked to investigate the beating, and two Vancouver officers were cleared of any wrongdoing.  Deputy Police Complaint Commissioner Bruce Brown tells News1130 the Delta file has been reviewed, and it’s felt a public hearing is necessary to preserve or restore public confidence. “An external police investigation revealed two materially different versions of events regarding the altercation and we think an independent adjudicator will be able to determine what happened that particular morning.”

Brown adds the public hearing will determine if misconduct occurred, and what, if any, discipline would be required.  No date has been set for the public hearing.
