More Canadians fear having to work past 65

By

An increasing number of Canadians fear they will be forced to work beyond 65.

That’s according to a new Harris Decima study which found about 40 per cent of Canucks aged 25-34 said having to work longer was their number one retirement concern – up 12 per cent from 2006.

Middle aged Canadians were also most likely to cite that as their biggest concern. Similar worries also increased in the States, where nearly a quarter of Americans feel the same, compared to 15 per cent four years ago.

Susan Eng of CARP, a national advocacy group representing Canadians 50 and over, said the concerns are well-founded because people believe they are not saving enough and that is creating a real insecurity about their retirements.
