Greater Vancouver food bank donations down by 20 per cent

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Demand is up and donations are down at the Greater Vancouver food bank this year. That, given the food bank gets about 85 per cent of its inventory over the holidays.

Heather MacKay is a single mother who relies on those donations to feed her family. Mackay was working as a landscaper, but it was seasonal so she was laid off. She says her three kids are at daycare two days a week and she spends that time looking for a job.

In the meantime, she needs those diapers and groceries from the food bank. “If you have stuff you don’t want, get rid of it and give it to somebody else.”

The donations can be dropped off at the food bank’s warehouse at 1150 Raymur in Vancouver. It will be open for extended hours December 20 to 23. You can also drop them off at local firehalls and chain grocery stores.
