Canucks start new year with a win

DENVER, CO (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Canucks held off a late surge to nip the Colorado Avalanche 2-1.  Roberto Luongo made 31 saves in the win.

The fourth line for the Canucks provided the goals in the tight game.  Alexandre Bolduc scored his first career NHL goal with 1:45 left in the first frame to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead.  After missing 10 games with a broken thumb, Mason Raymond made it 2-0 just past the three-minute mark of the third period.  Bolduc earned an assist, while Tanner Glass notched his second helper of the evening.

Roberto Luongo appeared to bat a Paul Stastny shot out of the goal with five and a half minutes to go in the third, but the referees checked the replay and awarded Stastny his 15th of the season.

Luongo made several clutch saves in the late stages to hang on to the two points for Vancouver.  The Canucks big money goalie is now 11-1-1 in his last 13 starts.  Playing in his first game since his first son was born, Luongo also recorded his second assist of the season. Vancouver’s goalies now have five assists on the year.

The team is 7-0-1 in its last eight games on the road, and has won five straight overall. The Canucks are also first overall in the NHL with 53 points.

They play in San Jose tonight at 7:30 p.m.
