Salo’s return is in doubt

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis is not sure that injured defenseman Sami Salo will return this season.

Gillis tells News 1130’s radio partner The Fan 590 Sportsnet Radio in Toronto that he isn’t sure that the veteran blueliner can recover from his summer Achilles injury before the end of the season.

He says Salo is moving very slowly and getting closer, but hasn’t played any meaningful hockey in eight months, and has a way to go. The 35-year-old Salo tore an Achilles tendon while playing floorball in Finland last July.

It’s estimated that the Canucks veteran has suffered about 35 injuries, costing him over 200 games in his 11-year NHL career. His injuries range from knee shoulder and ankle ailments, and he has even broken his ribs and his nose.

Salo was also reportedly bitten by a poisonous snake one summer on a Finnish golf course.
