US claims victory on Canadian lumber exports

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The US says it has won a victory on lumber exported from Quebec and Ontario.

It says an arbitration tribunal in London agrees with the US that the two provinces tried to get around the 2006 Canada-US softwood lumber agreement through grants, tax credits and loans.

The US trade representative says the tribunal has given Canada 30 days to fix the situation and if it doesn’t, will impose export taxes that would total $59 million by the end of the agreement in 2013. Non-compliance would also allow the US to impose penalty duties.

Earlier this week, the US launched an arbitration against Canada over exports of pine beetle-killed lumber from BC.
