Twins’ Justin Morneau skipping fan festival

ST. PAUL, MN. (NEWS1130) – New Westminster native and Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau has been told to skip the team’s annual fan festival this weekend so he can keep concentrating on his recovery from a concussion.

General Manager Bill Smith has told Morneau it would be better for him to continue working out in Phoenix and preparing for spring training.

“It’s still a work in progress,” Smith told the Twins website, ”but he has made tremendous progress since the end of the season. That’s why I don’t want to set that back.”

Smith adds Morneau has been working out hard, but is still a week to 10 days away from starting any baseball activities such as swinging a bat.

Morneau missed the last three months of last season because of the concussion.

Smith is confident Morneau will be ready to start the regular season with the club, but wants him to stick to his workout plan.
