Scrap yards urge police to give them lists of stolen items

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130)- The Fraser Valley Metal Exchange wants police to get involved with the metal theft problem by emailing a list of stolen items to scrap yards.

Owner Mike Salo says that would be a step in the right direction because operators always run into problems. “I can give you three pieces of copper, one’s stolen, the other two aren’t. Which one is stolen? Police can come down, they suspect people, [but] there is not enough evidence…”

He say it would not be too difficult to update. “I can’t see why they can’t take a description, put it on a site and email it to all the scarp yards, second-hand shops, pawn shops… We know if something has been stolen, we can actually keep our eye out for…”

He says a description and a photo of the item could go a long way. His operation now takes ID’s and has a list of people that are banned from his yard.
