Drop in BC retail sales in December

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The most important time of the year in retailing produced a significant drop in sales in British Columbia.

Statistics Canada says BC’s seasonally adjusted retail sales in December were 2.2 per cent lower than the previous month.  Stores across the province took in $4.8 billion, down more than $100 million from November.

BC’s month-over-month performance was the worst among the provinces.  Sales on a year-over-year basis were flat, with a slight drop even though the economy was weaker in 2009.

The national picture was little changed, with retail sales dropping two-tenths of a point from November although they rose 4.9 per cent compared to a year earlier and totaled more than $37 billion.  StatsCan reports drops in five of 11 sub-groups, led by a drop in new car sales.
