Racist graffiti spray painted on Richmond school

By

RICHMOND (NEWS1130) – Police in Richmond have no suspects after Gilmore Elementary School was vandalized Friday night.  It was one of two spots in the city, where someone spray painted racist remarks.

Police noticed the graffiti at the school when they were responding to a stabbing in the area Saturday morning, but the two incidents are not related.

Neighbours say among other things, the words ‘No Chinks, No Jews’ were spray painted in blue on the walls of the school.

People who live in the area around Gilmore Elementary say it’s been known to attract rowdy teenagers on the weekends, but they’ve never seen offensive graffiti before.

One parent tells News1130 she’s heard this was a crime scene, but says as a parent she has not picked up any racial tensions among students lately.

The school wasn’t the only place that was sprayed.  Police say more graffiti showed up at Blundell and Dyke Road.

Corporal Sherrdean Turley says they’re not sure if these two areas were targeted for a reason.  “It’s hard to say what people are thinking when they are spraying graffiti around.  I mean, obviously their intent is to put it in a location that can be seen.”

The offensive graffiti at the school has been removed.
