NDP and leadership candidate reach social media compromise

By

VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – The NDP and its leadership candidate have reached a compromise over access to social media. Nicholas Simons‘ Facebook and Twitter passwords will remain a secret.

The Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA says he’s going to make sure that the party knows that what they can see on his Facebook site will be acceptable to everyone.

“We found a place where we could respect the need for a good vetting process and to protect the privacy of me and those who’ve contacted me. I’m just going to provide them with evidence to that fact and I hope that satisfies their needs to see what I’ve published there.”

He was worried that not only does this violate his privacy, but also the privacy of his friends.  Simons feels this is an issue that other agencies and organizations are probably paying attention to.

The BC privacy commissioner is investigating the NDP’s demand.  Simons submitted his nomination package without his login information.

During the last provincial election campaign, the NDP was in damage control after embarrassing photos of a candidate were discovered on Facebook, forcing him to withdraw from the race.
