VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – All across spring training, Japanese ballplayers worry about those at home after Japan was struck by its biggest recorded earthquake and a massive tsunami.

Major League right fielder Ichiro Suzuki is with his team the Seattle Mariners in Arizona for spring training, but he is trying to contact his family after the devistating earthquake and tsunami hit his homeland. Cell phones and power are down making it very difficult to touch base. Four million homes are without hydro in Tokyo including Kobe, where Ichiro grew up.

Boston Red Sox’ pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka is trying get in touch with his grandmother.  New York Mets reliever Ryota Igarashi stayed up all night to see the devastation. Oakland slugger Hideki Matsui prays for the victims.

The Oakland Athletics will help relief aid by adding a fundraising effort to the previously scheduled Japanese Heritage Day on April 3, when Ichiro and the Mariners visit Matsui and the A’s at the Coliseum.
