Supplies of basics are in short supply in Japan

TOKYO, JP (NEWS1130) – While the international media has been focusing on the radiation dangers, some of the other threats to the Japanese people are for the most part being ignored.

Thousands of people are living in makeshift shelters. There are growing concerns about the drinking water, along with damaged sewer systems.

Daniel Ewacha grew up in Surrey but now lives in Tokyo. He tells News1130 many stores have empty shelves. “It’s very difficult to go out and get food, water, and basic necessities.”

“A lot of people have been going on ‘panic shopping,’ where people are trying to stock up on supplies,” he explains. “Supermarkets are closing early rather than staying late. Usually they open until around 10 or 11 p.m.; they’re closing at around 5 or 6 p.m. Convenience stores are pretty much depleted of all stock.”

“Another problem facing a lot of people is that the trains are being shut down to try and conserve electricity and energy for people up north,” says Ewacha.

The damaged roads and rail lines are making it difficult to bring in emergency supplies to some areas.
