BURNABY (NEWS1130) – They’re about to be laid off, and they’re trying to do something to stop it.
A group of cleaners and maintenance workers in Burnaby has been handed pink slips after a new management company took over the Brentwood Town Centre Mall, where they work.
Rally organizer Merryn Edwards says the cleaners and maintenance workers will be laid off next week, but they’re trying to fight it.
She says they want to send a message to the new owners. “Despite the fact that many of them have been there for more than 20 years, many long-term employees have dedicated themselves to the mall for a long time, but now this new company has come in and laid everybody off.”
She says nearly 20 workers are going to be left scrambling, trying to find other work.
A local MLA and city councillor will be there to support the workers.
