Canucks can clinch first in Western Conference tonight

NASHVILLE, TN. (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Canucks can clinch first in the Western Conference and they don’t even play tonight.

The Chicago Blackhawks have to beat the Detroit Red Wings.  If they do, the title will be a first for the Canucks in franchise history.

Vancouver leads Detroit and the San Jose Sharks by 12 points atop the West standings.

The Canucks are also close to clinching the President’s trophy as the top team in the NHL.  Vancouver leads the Philadelphia Flyers by nine points for the top spot.

The Canucks reached 50 victories yesterday when they beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1.  It was the first time in the club’s 40-year history that the team reached 50 wins.

Vancouver will wrap up their four-game road trip in Nashville Tuesday night.

The Canucks have not confirmed a Twitter posting today that suggested injured forward Manny Malhotra will have surgery done on his eye Tuesday.  NBA star Steve Nash, Malhotra’s brother-in-law, tweeted, “I need my brother-in-law, Manny Malhotra, to have a successful eye surgery tomorrow saving his eye and vision.”

Malhotra has not played since a puck hit him in his left eye in a game against Colorado on March 16th.
