VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver is not number one. We’re not even close.

Our country’s capital has been named Canada’s Best Place to Live, according to the 6th annual ranking in MoneySense magazine.

There is some good news.  Vancouver is still way ahead of Toronto taking the 29th spot.  The ‘Big Smoke’ ranks 88th out of 180 communities across the country.

The magazine’s Joe Castaldo says we can place some blame on real estate.  “[Vancouver] is the most expensive city in the country, which probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise.  But also, it is the least affordable.  The average home price in Vancouver is 9.5 times the average income.”

Castaldo explains they looked at a number of other categories, including health care and crime.          But he adds there are some categories that are out of our control.  “The weather is actually the most influential category in our ranking and we can’t do anything about that.”

This is the second year in a row that Ottawa has taken top spot.  Victoria moved into second spot, Montreal is 123rd.

New Glasgow, Nova Scotia finished in last place.
