WHL to make its return to Victoria?

VICTORIA (NEWS1130) –  It’s expected that the Western Hockey League will announce on Wednesday the relocation of the Chilliwack Bruins franchise to Victoria next season.

The WHL sent out a press release today calling for a press conference on Wednesday in the provincial capital.

WHL director of communications Cory Flett didn’t return a call from News 1130.

The Victoria Times is reporting that RG Properties, the operators of Save-on-Foods Memorial Center and owners of the Victoria Salmon Kings of the ECHL, has reportedly bought the Bruins franchise from an ownership group that includes Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke and New York Rangers general manager Glen Sather.

The state of the Salmon Kings is uncertain, however, it is expected that the franchise will be sold or folded.

The WHL spent 23 seasons in Victoria before relocating to Prince George after the 1993-94 season.

The Bruins spent five seasons in Chilliwack.
