Vancouver wants bike share program

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – With gas prices nearing $1.40 around Metro Vancouver, many drivers could be thinking about ways to ditch their cars.  To help offset the cost of fuel at the pump, Vancouver is trying to set up a bike share program.

Councillor Geoff Meggs says the City of Vancouver has been in talks with a group called Bike Share BC and they’re now asking anyone who’s interested in running a program to come forward.

“In the last three years, the number of cities with bike share programs has gone from about 20 worldwide to 80.”

He says operators would set up bike racks around the city and people could use a credit card to pick up a bike at one location and drop it off at another. He admits concerns around theft and how to handle the province’s helmet law will have to be addressed.

Potential operators have until May 17 to talk with the city.  If one is found, a bike share program could be set up by next summer.
