Social media could be bigger than industrial revolution

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The prediction is that we have not even come close to realizing the true impact of social media. Sites like Facebook and Twitter appear to be the new front line in consumer and political struggles around the world.

Economist Lindsey Meredith with SFU, a consumer affairs specialist, says social media’s impact will ultimately be greater than that of the industrial revolution.

People questioning the ethics of the goods they buy, or of their government, are finding a common voice. “We covered more ground in the last five years, than we did in the last 35 years on the ethical front.”

He says its users are mostly young and the true impact of social media has not yet been realized. “What you’re going to see rolling out is going to make the industrial revolution look like a walk in the park, and this is just part of the fallout, if you will, that is coming off that whole Internet structure.”

Recent Stats Canada numbers show that ethical choices are increasingly an important consideration for consumers, especially among young people who are heavy social media users.
